Career Journey
Question:
Can you tell us about your career journey and how you got to where you are today?
Answer:
My career in HR began in 2005 with Civmec Construction, as their first dedicated HR professional. From there, I progressed to roles with McConnell Dowell and Mount Gibson Iron, where I held a dual HR and HSE corporate role for several years.
Over the years, I’ve broadened my experience across a range of sectors including gold mining, oil and gas, HR consulting, and retail. Each role added a different dimension to my HR skill set. Joining Aerison feels like a return to my roots in contracting, and I’m excited to contribute once again in this space.
Question:
What have been some of the key lessons or experiences that have shaped your approach to people and culture?
Answer:
Before transitioning into HR, I served as a WA Police Officer where I learnt that, at our core, people are driven by a few fundamental needs: to be seen, to be heard, and to feel safe. These insights continue to shape my approach to people and culture.
I believe that when an organisation actively acknowledges these needs, it sends a powerful message of respect and value. My approach to HR centres on creating a workplace where people feel their individuality is honoured, while still feeling part of a united and supportive team.
Leadership & Impact
How do you support leaders across the business to develop their teams and create positive working environments?
Answer:
Listening is key. Our leaders know their teams well, so I work closely with them to uncover insights and support pathways for growth that align with business goals. When development and direction are aligned, it strengthens both individual performance and team unity. Everyone plays a role in shaping workplace culture. As HR professionals, we’re accountable not just to leadership, but to every employee. I believe happiness drives success—so even in tough moments, I focus on the positives. Life’s too short for negativity; sometimes, it’s about shifting direction and finding your sense of purpose again.
Career Advice
Question:
What advice would you give to someone starting out in HR, especially in industries like engineering or mining services?
Answer:
Resilience is essential in HR, especially in fast-paced industries like engineering and mining, where no two days are the same. You need to wear many hats, pivot quickly, and stay calm under pressure. People come to you for solutions so agility and lateral thinking are essential skills. Understanding your industry and its people gives you valuable insight to build stronger teams. And above all, never lose your compassion – HR is about people. Empathy helps you navigate challenges and stay grounded in your purpose.
